With the recent explosion of EDM in Philadelphia, it comes as no surprise that we are getting some real heavy hitters touring in this area. This past Friday, the city’s mecca for house and trance DJ’s, Whisper Club, welcomed back Thomas Gold for a second time. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing the Berlin- based DJ yet, jump on any opportunity that you can to see him. Seriously. This guy knew how to work a crowd and get everyone moving. I’ll be honest, before I went to see him on Friday, I didn’t know too much about him. I just knew that the tracks I did hear from him were bangers. But, with any DJ, seeing him live was a completely different experience than listening to his tracks on Itunes or Spotify. His energy was incredible and really rubbed off on everyone in the club. I don’t think anyone in Whisper was really ready for Thomas Gold, but once he started, we were definitely picking up what he was throwing down. And he was throwing down amazing.
I appreciate nothing more than a DJ who creates the perfect balance between their own music and sampling other DJ’s. Thomas Gold certainly knows how to do just that. His set included his original mixes like “What’s Up” (collaborating with Alex Kenji) and “Sing 2 Me”, but he also included some favorites like his own remix of “Breakin a Sweat” by Skrillex and The Doors, Otto Knows’ “Million Voices” (my personal favorite of the night), and a really sweet mashup of Alesso’s “Duel” and Justice’s “We Are Your Friends”. He ended the night on a positive note with Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close”. Thomas Gold will be continuing his North American tour, playing at Mansion Miami, EDC Vegas, Opera Nightclub in Atlanta, and other various cities across the nation. So what are you waiting for?
